Types of Surfboards

Today's modern surfboards are light and strong, made from foam and fibreglass. They come in a range of different shapes and sizes, suitable for a range of different surfing conditions and experience levels. Your surfboard is your most important piece of surfing equipment so choosing the right one for you, is very important. Here we'll take you through 3 of the main types of surfboards available:

Longboards

Longboards are also known as Malibu boards and are ideal for beginners as they are long and easy to balance and paddle on. Longboards are generally eight to ten feet long and come with a soft top deck to avoid accidents. The wider and larger the board, the more buoyant it is, so it's easier to catch waves with. The one difficult thing about longboards is there sheer size. They can be hard to maneuver in and out of the water.

Shortboard

A shortboard is thinner and more narrow than other types of surfboards. They are between six and eight feet in length and have a rounded tail and a pointed nose. You need a little bit more experience to be able to use a shortboard as they require you to stand in the center in order for you to be able to balance. Because they are thinner and narrower, they tend to be less buoyant and despite the fact that they are easier to maneuver because of their size, they are in fact harder to use.

Funboard

Often referred to as a Mini Mal, a funboard is a combination of a longboard and a shortboard. They range from seven to eight feet long and have a rounded tail and nose. They have the maneuverability of a longboard with the speed of a shortboard, making it easier to catch waves. Funboards are popular amongst all surfers, including beginners and those changing from a longboard to a shortboard.

You want to have a safe surfing experience every time and choosing the right surfboard for you is of paramount importance to remain safe, have fun and to ensure you get the most out of your surfing experience every time.

"I discovered surfing, which I absolutely fell in love with. That feels good and kind of keeps your body aligned, so does the salt water."
