The Surfy Culture

The Surfy Culture

Surf culture originates in Hawaii, where people were riding the waves for thousands of years before it spread across the world. It began as a spiritual way of life and had now become very much a lifestyle for millions of people across the world.

Of course, the core principle behind the surfy culture is the love of surfing. Surfies tend to live as close to the coastline as possible, so they can spend as much time as they are able, in the water. Many beaches that are made popular by good surf often become hubs for people seeking out the surfer lifestyle. Ocean Beach in San Diego is one such place.

Some groups of surfers stake claim to certain surfing spots and ward off non-locals. But there are also plenty of surfers who simply enjoy the waves at any beach and don't ever become possessive over certain surfing hot spots. These chilled out, laid back surfers are often referred to as soul surfers, because they see surfing as a soulful experience not just as a sport.

In the 1990's the surf culture grew exponentially. It was not just about the surf. The surf culture had it's own niche in music, movies, fashion and even language.

Many surfers have also helped make significant improvements to the environments in which they surf, with many surfing organisations campaigning for a cleaner environment.

While the surf culture becomes increasingly mainstream, there's no doubt that many surfers simply enjoy the activity, or even see it as a spiritual experience, being amongst nature and being at the mercy of the ocean.

"As for my own surfing, let's just say that when the waves start pushing 10 feet, I get this tremendous urge to make a sandwich."
