Surfing Competitions
The Makaha International Surfing Championships in Hawaii held in 1954 is said to be the first modern surfing comp.
This competition set the standard for other competitions of its kind which means a separate comp for women, men and juniors. There are also different categories such as: paddleboarding, mat surfing, tandem surfing, bodysurfing and night torch surfing.
Other big surfing competitions include the Duke Kahanamoku Classic, the Pipeline Masters and the Smirnoff Pro-Am.
The Association of Surfing Professionals is also responsible for creating the first world tour for pro surfers in 1976. Known as the World Championship Tour, it includes the World Qualifying Series and the feeder circuit.
The ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) is the governing body when it comes to pro surfing and they award the title of World Surfing Champion each year. To decide who the best competition surfer is, the ASP take into account the points earned by surfers at events which include the ASP World Championship Tour Surfing.
The world tour is made up of six professional circuits: ASP Women’s World Tour, Foster’s ASP World Tour, the men’s and women’s World Qualifying Series (WQS), the World Junior Championships, World Longboarding Tour, the World Masters Championships plus some extra specialty events.
Surfing competitions are now held at different beaches across the world. And comps are not only for the professionals either. There are also amateur comps which are fun to enter.
Surfing competitions are always held during the peak swell seasons. It’s all about judging the skill of surfers when they are faced with tackling the biggest and best waves in the world. As more and more people become interested in surfing, competitions have also become more popular and winners can not only expect championships titles and cash prizes but endorsement contracts as well.
