Frontside Floater

Frontside Floater

A Floater is basically the name given to the surfing maneuver which involves riding the lip of a breaking wave, then falling down as it breaks. This is a good maneuver to do when finishing a ride when the wave is closing out. The main steps to remember when performing a Floater are: Entering and then floating on the lip, and landing.

You can perform either a Frontside Floater or a Backside Floater. Here we will go through the steps on how to do the frontside version of this maneuver:

1. Perform a Frontside Bottom Turn in the middle of the wave, at an angle.
2. As you ride up the face of the wave attempt to gain as much speed as possible and slightly twist your upper body towards the lip.
3. Shift your weight to your heel side once you've reached the lip.
4. Now you've floated on the top of the whitewater. Look over your shoulder and to the direction you're headed.
5. Pull the nose down in the direction of the landing spot to come off the lip.
6. Ride down the face of the wave ensuring that your knees are bent.

The Frontside Floater requires a decent Bottom Turn, correct weight distribution and balance. Once you've mastered the Frontside Floater, you can then move on and improve your skills further by learning how to perform a Backside Floater.
