What is Snowboarding
  • Just What is Snowboarding?
  • You might think you've seen enough snowboarding on TV or YouTube or in magazine to get an idea of what it is, but there's so much more to it than that.

Imagine it like skateboarding... but replace 'wheels' with 'snow,' of course! Although popular, snowboarding is still a relatively new sport, with the boarder using a snowboard made from epoxy-fiberglass. You strap your feet into the board and control it by manipulating gravity towards your desired direction, whether you're going down a ski slope or through a pipe.

Most important when controlling the board is to carefully maintain your balance as you slide down the slope or through the pipe with both feet secured tightly to high-back or non-release plate bindings.

Where skiers use their weight to shift from side to side as they move, snowboarders shift their weight from their heels to their toes and from one end of the board to the other. Boarders stop moving by pushing their heels and toes down hard to dig the board's edge into the snow. If anything, snowboarding techniques are naturally more similar to skateboarding and surfing with the way the boarder controls the motion of the board than to skiing.
